Overall, it was a great weekend of softball. In the High School group, the Petoskey Blaze captured the B-final with a 7-2 victory over the Traverse City Thunder Newman team, while Recon Reno scratched out a C-final victory over the Northern Michigan Pride, 3-2. In 14U, Kris Siadi's 5-Tool Fastpitch team defeated the Petoskey Blaze, 12-0, in the B-final while HangTuf edged the Grand Rapids Flames in the C-final. ![]() The Fusion's 12U compadres doubled up the Grand Rapids Diamonds in that division's consolation final. In 10U, the Caledonia Chaos edged 231 Fusion, 5-4. There was lots of action in the "B" and "C" finals also. Like Elite '08, Chris Dana's Chaos squad rang up four wins on Sunday-after going 3-0 in pool play-while giving up just five runs total throughout the four Sunday games. In the High School division, the Caledonia Chaos edged the Northern Michigan Legends, 2-0, in a well-played contest. Coach Sarnicola, whose teams seem to make a deep tournament run every year, skippered his team to four wins on Sunday alone, including the title game victory. In 14U, Joe Sarnicola's Elite '08 squad doubled up the Great Lakes Renegades, 6-3, in the championship game. Nick McCalla's Madness 11U also had a great tournament run, but the Batbusters were definitely the cream of the 12U crop. In the 12U division, the Frank Yoskovich-led Michigan Batbusters rolled over Motor City Madness 11U, 12-0, to earn the home plate trophy. The Barracudas-a late entry and a team new to the Traverse City tournaments-had a great tournament weekend, but the Pride bats were too strong to overcome in the final. ![]() In the 10U group, Ken Elkins' Inter-Lakes Pride ambushed the Au Sable Barracudas with 12 runs in the third inning en route to a 12-0 victory. ![]() There was perfect weather all weekend long as teams in the 10U, 12U, 14U and High School divisions waged friendly battle on the softball fields of Traverse City. The 18U group was competitive and fun to watch-well done, ladies! In the 18U division, Phil Meeker's Northern Michigan Elite edged another local team, the TC Thunder, 10-6 to earn the tournament title. After that, they ran the table with five straight victories including a 7-2 win over the TC Thunder in the championship contest. In 16U, Mike Radka's Great Lakes Renegades lost it's first game of the tournament on Friday night. From there, they picked up steam and ultimately toppled Crown Softball, 6-2, in the final. Mike Fesl's Pinckney-based squad survived a first-round playoff scare against the TC Thunder, winning 5-4. In the 14U division, Intruders Fastpitch was the cream of a very good crop of teams. Both teams played extremely well throughout the weekend. In the 12U group, Nate Skop's Northern Michigan Legends squeezed past Liz Nahavandi's B45 Academy team, 2-1, to earn the tournament title. The Barracudas allowed only two runs in three bracket play games-well done, ladies! In June, Cherelle Burkett's squad took home the Northern Classic title, and about a month later they clutched the Softball Spectacular home plate trophy by shutting out the Stealers, 4-0. On Sunday night, five teams-The Au Sable Barracudas (10U), Northern Michigan Legends (12U, Intruders Fastpitch (!4U), Great Lakes Renegades (16U) and Northern Michigan Elite (18U) were left standing.įor the Barracudas, it was their second tournament title in Traverse Ctiy this year. With the closing weekend of the National Cherry Festival providing the backdrop, teams in divisions ranging from 10U to 18U battled it out on the fields of Traverse City. The 2023 Traverse city Summer Softball Series drew to a close with the Softball Spectacular tournament in which five teams earned titles.
